Hypothyroidism, altered leptin and c-reactive protein synthesis characterised pregnancy exposed to genistein

Awobajo Funmileyi

This study examined the mechanism by which genistein produced adverse effects in pregnant laboratory rats. Pregnant rats were divided into control (Con) and genistein (Gen) force fed (2 mg/kg) groups. At terminal gestation day (GD) ranging from 0 to 20, the rats were sacrificed, and blood samples and amniotic fluids were collected. Thyroid hormone, C-reactive protein (CRP) and leptin assay was carried using the blood samples. Leptin was also assayed in the placenta and amnioti...

The mechanism of the adverse influence of genistein; a soya phytoestrogen on foetal development is still poorly understood. Previous reports showed adverse effects on thyroid and leptin hormone, C-reactive protein and thyroxin kinase activities. This study evaluated the changes to the level of the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) and placenta growth factor (PGF) in rat pregnancy exposed to genistein. Pregnant rats grouped into 2 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg genistein treated groups w...

Aberrant fetal development precipitated by genistein is accompanied with disruption in the Giant Trophoblast cell histomorphometry, and alteration in the serum, placenta and the amniotic fluid oxidation-reduction system

Genistein is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), derived from soya, with reported adverse effects on fetal development. The placenta regulates fetal environment for fidelity of organogenesis which can be compromised by several external factors including EDCs. This study examined the influence of genistein on the histomorphometry of the Giant Trophoblast Cells (GTC) of the placenta and the oxidative stress balance across the maternal serum, placenta and t...
